Galatians is a heated, uncompromising defense of Pauls authority as an apostle, and the gospel of the grace of God. It is directed against the Judaizing teachers who were denying the all-sufficiency of Christs work for salvation and were demanding that the Galatian converts be circumcised and observe the Law. Pauls ringing defense of justification by faith has frequently been called The Magna Carta of Christian liberty. Paul wrote to the Colossians to combat error that had crept into the church. Paul, in prison, was informed by Epaphras that certain doctrines and practices were threatening the faith of the Colossian Christians and they were in danger of drifting from the gospel. Thus, Paul writes to combat certain false teachings about Christ and gives encouragement for the Christian life. His writings were edifying and applicable for first century Colossians, and for all believers in 2008.
